WHAT IS THE FEAST OF THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA IN ROME?

“Quick question: What is the “mother church” for Roman Catholics? Most people think it’s St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, but that is incorrect. Yes, St. Peter’s is where all the high-profile events of the Catholic Church take place: the announcement and blessing of the new pope; the general papal audiences; the canonization of new saints; and the annual Christmas Midnight Mass with the Holy Father, seen by a worldwide audience. These are significant events, but if St. Peter’s is not the mother church of the Catholic faith, what is?

 

The answer is: the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. The basilica is named after St. John the Baptist and after the Lateranus family, on whose property the great church was built. St. John Lateran is the earliest basilica of Christianity. What is a basilica? The term originally referred to the large open spaces in the Roman Empire that were used for public gatherings. In the Catholic Church, basilica refers to a large and important church that has been given ceremonial rights by the pope.

Every bishop has a cathedral church, the central church of the diocese where the bishop’s chair or cathedra is housed. The pope is the Bishop of Rome, and his diocesan cathedral is St. John Lateran.

 

Why does the whole Church celebrate the dedication of this Roman archbasilica today? First, keep in mind that many parishes, including cathedrals, celebrate the anniversary of their dedication. You can think of that Dedication Day as a local feast day for the parish. Since St. John Lateran is the mother church for all of Catholicism, in a very real sense, today, November 9, is a “local” feast day for the whole Church.”

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED

We need volunteers to come to St. Andrew on Tuesday mornings at 10 to count the offertory from both churches. The Diocesan Audit found that our procedures for counting were inadequate and gave us a new method. We need about 8 volunteers from each church to serve on a rotating schedule. Please call Kelly if you can help.

REACh (Religious Education for Adult Christians) is facilitated by Joe Oliveti. One group meets in the Social Hall at Sacred Heart on Fridays at 10 am. Another group meets via Zoom on Wednesdays at 7 pm.

 

OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults) meets weekly on Monday evenings live at St. Andrew the Apostle at 6pm.

In today's second reading, St. Paul reminds us that each of us is a living stone in God’s building, with Christ as the only true foundation. Our lives, our talents, and our resources are not our own—they are entrusted to us to help strengthen the Church. As stewards, we are called to build carefully, honoring the holiness of God’s dwelling within us. When we give generously of our time, talent, and treasure, we are not just maintaining a structure—we are helping God’s Spirit shine forth in His holy people.

 A message from the Food Pantry at St. Andrew: Since the Food Pantry started in July, we have served over 100 families. Some of these families are senior citizens, some of them are single-mother families, some are grandmas raising grandkids. All of them have told us they don’t know what they’d do without our help. Each week, we meet someone we have never met before. So, THANK YOU for your genuine caring and your generosity to our community.
